He plays and draws inspiration from a variety of styles of music including Jazz, Funk, Hip-Hop, Soul, R&B, Folk, and Rock, with influences ranging from Kenny Kirkland and Larry Goldings, to Stevie Wonder, Joni Mitchell, and Snarky Puppy.

The Bellville are a gypsy jazz inspired band formed in early 2017. The name is derived from the signature strumming style of gypsy jazz known as “le pompe”, that gives this music its distinctive swing.

With a constant emphasis on groove, melodic and rhythmic interplay, and chance-taking, this trio continues to mine an ever-growing repertoire of jazz classics, tunes from the American Songbook and original compositions with a forward thinking view, yet always with a deep sense of swing, immediacy, warmth, connection and reverence for the history of the music.

Smith has recorded with many significant jazz artists including Richie Beirach, Billy Hart, Adam Rogers, Clarence Penn, Taylor Eigsti, and Eric Harland.
Steve will be playing (bass) with Tristan Paxton (guitar), and Sam Cartwright (drums).
